Five Tips To Make School Mornings Less Stressful

Hello friends!

I'm back from my summer break & getting back into the swing of things around here!
Did you have an enjoyable summer? I hope so!

School started today & there's nothing like the first day back to school in the fall to give a mom a swift kick in the "welcome back to reality"!
Things went off relatively smoothly & the kids & I even managed to take a few minutes for some photos before driving to school.

We've been doing the school thing for a five years now (my oldest is in grade 5 this year), & though things are rarely perfect, with a little planning & thinking ahead, you can make things less stressful for you & your kids in the mornings.

Here's what I've learned...

1) Think through the things you want your kids to do every morning before heading off for school. Write them down. You can make a chore chart or just a hand-written list for your kids to work from.  Try using pictures for children who aren't reading yet. This list or chart is especially helpful on busy mornings.

Then, come up with consequences for not getting things done or for doddling. (In our house we have a saying, "Doddling is disobeying.") Communicate these with your children. In our house, there's little time for fooling around before school. There's stuff to be done! If they aren't doing what needs to be done, enforce the consequences you've put in place. If Billy is playing on his iPod instead of brushing his teeth, thus & so will happen. You get the idea.

I find that it takes the stress off of me. All the tasks are there in black & white (or colour if you've made a fancy chart.) The kids know what is expected of them. The kids can't say, "You didn't tell me to!" & I don't have to try to remember if I did or not! :)

Find a printable list, do a list on your computer & print it off, have one of their iPod or phone that they can see, or use a store bought chore chart. Whatever works for you.

We use a simple handwritten list posted on the fridge. The list is pretty much the same for both kids:

  • Get dressed
  • Make Bed
  • Do Hair
  • Pack Lunch (a tip about this coming up!)
  • Have Breakfast
  • Brush Teeth
  • Pack Backpack (a tip on this one coming too - read on!)

These are the basics to get out the door. If things are going smoothly, I like to see the following get done as well:

  • Dishwasher emptied & reloaded
  • Laundry taken to the laundry room
  • Garbages emptied
You may have more items or less. The point is to think about what the kids need to do & get them to take ownership!

2) Do some lunch prep the night before & get the kids to help. Come up with a plan. This year, I've been thinking of some ways to keep lunch interesting & not just make the same sandwich day after day.

Here's what I came up with:

Monday: Pita sandwich
Tuesday: Salad
Wednesday: Sandwich or put leftovers in a thermos
Thursday: Soup
Friday: Tortilla wrap

We'll likely switch the days around & not have salad every Tuesday, for example, but it's 5 days of a different meal.

Also, do some chopping! Again, to stay away from boring fruit choices - "an apple again?"- chop up a cantaloupe (one average cantaloupe makes 5 - 1 cup servings). Fruit salad is another fun option. Try to make healthy food interesting & fun.

Have guidelines for the things that they MUST pack - fruit, only one treat item, etc.

Pack lunches the night before. We do as much as we can the night before & leave things like wraps & sandwiches for the morning. No one likes soggy sandwiches!

3) Have a plan for when kids forget something at home.

Our school is a 15 minute drive (in good traffic) from our house. Both ways? You do the math. I am NOT going to be driving back & forth all year, bringing the kids their forgotten homework, lunches, & gym clothes.

We have this rule set in place: Each child has 2 "free rides" per school year.

If they forget something, they decide if it's important enough to call mom to bring it. They have to weigh what's most important: Forgotten lunch = My friends will probably share with me because I share when one of my friends forgets VS. Forgotten gym clothes = I miss basketball practice & can't play in the big game this weekend. You get the picture.

It forces them to look through their things before leaving the house in the morning to make sure they have everything.

Remember, we want them to take responsibility.

4) Make your kids "earn" TV, video game, & media time.

This isn't specifically just for mornings, but it does apply here too.

During the school year, our kids must do extra school work (get ahead) to earn screen time. One page = 10 minutes. Things are a bit more lax in the summer, but right now we're talking about school. :)

There are also stipulations to this:
  • You have to be caught up in all your subjects, not way behind in Math, but ahead in Science
  • There is a maximum amount of screen time per day of 30 minutes.
  • Screen time only takes place after school or in the evening. **Never in the morning.** (Remember that you have that list to take care of??)
5) Get backpacks & lunch bags up off the floor. Have a place for school shoes, jackets, etc.

Visual clutter really bothers me. I honestly don't feel like I can relax if things are a mess around me. That's not everyone, I understand, but having things in their place adds so much ease in the morning when a person is trying to heard kids out the door.

Even if it's a big basket by the door that the kids throw their shoes into at the end of the day, at least you  (& they) know where to look in the morning. Hang jackets in the closet or on hooks & have a designated place for backpacks, homework, papers from the teacher, lunch bags, etc.

I've recently put up some sticky hooks (the kind that don't damage the wall if you want to remove them) in our linen closet. We don't have room to store the kid's lunch bags in our kitchen, so after school they empty out any garbage & hang them up there.

Just knowing where things are takes off a lot of stress not to mention making things easier getting out the door in the morning!

These are some of the things I've learned along the way.

What are some things that have helped you? I'd love to know!

Insta-Friday #26

Wow, it's Friday already! And first off, I have a question for you all:

I just made up our next week's menu plan & was wondering... Is menu planning something that you do? If not, would it be something you would like some help with? Would you enjoy seeing a weekly menu plan on the blog with links to recipes?? I'm interested in your thoughts!

And now... welcome to another Insta-Friday!
I filled you in on last weekend's festivities earlier this week & you can check out that post HERE.

Oh, and before we begin, you will see that I'm in serious like with the Rhonna Designs App
If you are an Instagramer, GO. BUY. IT.
I think I like it because, for me, it's like creating a little scrapbook layout for every photo you use.

After the big birthday barbecue on Saturday, Sunday was a quieter day. After church & my weekly Sunday afternoon nap, I got in some much needed creative time. Working on a card order was like therapy. Loveliness!

Monday morning brought us the first morning of a two week session of summer swimming lessons for the kids. I love the turquoise of the pool. It's such a refreshing sight every morning.

On Tuesday morning we had another beautiful morning at the pool...

After the kid's swim, we headed over to the gorgeously treed park across from the street from the pool. This is what a park should look like. The people who live near this park are so blessed to have such a lovely view!

This park had an old school playground, complete with an old metal slide.
Do you remember wearing shorts on these old slides when it was hot outside? Burnt legs!

"Awesomer" has long been a favourite word of mine & I use it often. So when I saw that Rhonna had used it in her app, it sure made me smile!

A big highlight of my day on Tuesday was the grand opening of our first two Target stores in Saskatoon! I have to say that I was really impressed! It was almost everything I had hoped for.
Note to Target Canada: We need a scrapbook/craft isle! (I just took a moment to comment on their Facebook page before I forgot.) ;) The prices are a bit higher than Target U.S.A., but I expected that, since Canadian prices are always higher. I'm seriously looking forward to stalking the clearance sections in a few weeks. I'll be a regular, for sure!!!

My first trip to Target resulted in one purchase: a new shower curtain! And a chevron/hexagon shower curtain to boot. The greens match our green bathroom walls so perfectly! I had wanted to paint the bathroom for awhile now, but this shower curtain has breathed new life into this room & I love it again!

This week, I've really been working on getting exercise into each day. For too long I've been letting the days go by & thinking that things would magically come together "tomorrow".
It was always tomorrow.

I'm getting real with myself & making physical activity a priority in my schedule.
"If not now, When?" is my motto for this summer.
I've even included it each day in my daily iPhone to-do list.

I'm not letting the days slip by anymore before I make something of them!

Enjoying the Psalms...

On Thursday afternoon, we were planning to go to the pool with friends, but it was pouring rain.
Plan B: Despicable Me 2 with friends. It was so cute & we all really enjoyed it.
The songs at the end were my favourite. Laugh out loud funny!

When we got home from the movie, the sun had come out & it was hot & muggy.
We dug out some balloons from birthday parties gone by & made some water balloons!
The kids got wet & I managed to stay out of the line of fire long enough to get some photos.

It's been a great summer week for us. I hope it has been for you too!

Insta-Friday #23, #24, #25

Another week of telling you the stories behind my Instagram photos! Three week's worth, this time! You may want to grab a coffee... ;)

Once our peonies started blooming it rained for days which means we didn't get a whole lot of time to enjoy them. In between the rain showers, I managed to get this shot.

After all the rain, the plants (and the weeds!) were growing profusely! And weeding was a super muddy job!

Boys Room Reveal!

The day is finally here!

After giving myself the challenge of completing my son, Parker's, bedroom makeover by the end of May, bit by bit I got projects done & this past weekend we were able to put on the finishing touches.

Let me show you around! Come on in!

This yellow-with-black-trim room was how it looked when we moved here 6 years ago. And wasn't my little guy cute when he was just 4? I just want to kiss those cheeks! (He's still cute, btw!)

When we moved here, we painted his room & replaced the flooring, but that's about it.

Boy's Room Makeover (Part 2): The Dresser

My son's room makeover marches on!

Last week, I painted his beat up dresser a fun shade of orange...

Here is the war-torn dresser before...
(Complete with little boy hieroglyphics from years past.)

Boy's Room Makeover (Part 1): The Art Work

The month of May holds a fun DIY project for me — to makeover my son, Parker's bedroom.

My to-do list includes:

I'm done the first thing on the list, so that's a start!

While we were on our epic summer vacation last summer, we picked up some memorabilia with Parker's room decor in mind.

We got these coasters in Cars Land at Disneyland & the Lego minifigures at Legoland (you'll see them below).

After picking up some frames from Michael's, I simply backed the openings with cardstock, then mounted these coasters on with some permanent adhesive squares.

Letter Sweater Pillow {Breaking In My New Sewing Machine}

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have heard that I was blessed with a new sewing machine for Christmas.

Last weekend, I finally carved out some time to break it out of the box & try it out!

This was my first project.

Since I'm such a beginner at sewing I didn't attempt to do up a tutorial, but just wanted to share it with you.

I used a thrifted sweater to sew the pillow cover & then used my cricut to cut out a template for the "P". I traced the "P" onto some grey felt, cut it out & sewed it on.

It was pretty easy & didn't take me all that long.

My son, Parker was really excited to have a new little cushion on his reading chair. His reaction was priceless. Who knew a 9 year old would get so excited over a pillow? He must be a chip of the old block, as they say. :)

Here's to many more successful sewing projects!

Felt Pinwheel Headbands

A while ago I shared with you how to make felt pinwheels to use as a gift wrap idea & today I'm sharing another idea of how to use the same kind of felt pinwheels.

This is a fast & simple little project. It's a really nice way to make a matching hair accessory for your little girl's favourite outfit.

Here's what you'll need to make one:

  • Felt in whatever colour you like
  • A large button
  • Headband
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Hot glue gun
Using this template, cut out a square from your felt. Then cut the slits as shown.

Line up the edges (where the dots on the template are) to make the pinwheel & stitch the edges, adding the button to the top centre.

Hot glue to the side of the headband.

Give it to your favourite little girl to model & enjoy!

Summer Layout {My Mind's Eye}

There's something about this colour combo that just screams "SUMMER!" to me.
Orange & turquoise... the colours of afternoon sunshine, orange popcicles, open water, & clear sky.

The perfect colour combo for a cheery summer layout featuring my son.

This is one of my favourite layouts of late. And because I used papers from a single line it made co-ordinating the patterns a breeze (like a summer breeze). ;)

I used my Cricut & a couple circle punches to get all the different circle sizes.

Usually I do my journalling by hand. Mostly because it's faster for me. This time, I was trying to get out of my normal scrapping routine, so I typed up my journalling in plain old Times New Roman
(way faster than searching for the "perfect" font for what would turn into hours),
making sure I double spaced the sentences.
I printed it out onto white cardstock, trimmed it into strips, & adhered to fit in with the circle pattern.

I also love how the title turned out. I wanted to use these letters that I had in my stash & had kind of forgotten about, but there wasn't room to line them up in a row. I pop-dotted every other letter to make a layered effect. Love it!

Supplies Used:

  • Patterned paper - My Mind's Eye Fine & Dandy line
  • Corrugated letters - Jillibean Soup
  • Small letter stickers - Basic Grey
  • Felt stars - Pebbles
  • Flair Badge - American Crafts
  • White cardstock - Bazzill Basics
  • Font - Times New Roman

What have you been working on lately?
